Why Do Ethiopia And Eritrea Hate Each Other?

On September 7th, 2015, Eritrea accused its
neighbor, Ethiopia, of “rachet[ing] up” threats of invasion. For a large part of their history,
the two nations have been in constant conflict with each other. So, why do Eritrea and Ethiopia
hate each other? Well, originally, Eritrea emerged as an Italian
colony during the 1800s western scramble for Africa. In exchange for support, Ethiopia
granted some of their territories to Italy, leading to what was then known as Italian
Eritrea. The colony flourished over several decades, and Eritrea became culturally distinct
from neighboring Ethiopia. But in the 1930s, Italy began expanding its reach throughout
Africa, and invaded Ethiopia, fairly easily seizing control. However, World War Two proved disastrous for
Italy. Because Ethiopia had supported the Allies during the war, they were granted independence
by the British, with Eritrea operating under the federal authority of Ethiopia, but with
some level of autonomy. But Ethiopia’s ruler imposed a number of restrictions on Eritrea
in an attempt to isolate and remove the power of their government. Finally, in 1962, Eritrea’s
parliament was dissolved, and the country was invaded by Ethiopia. This officially initiated
the Eritrean War of Independence, though some had already been fighting since a year earlier. This war lasted for thirty years, and effectively
destroyed any positive relationship between the two countries. Their economies collapsed,
and 100,000 people were killed. During the war, Ethiopia’s government was replaced
by a military junta, which authorized the massacre and destruction of numerous Eritrean
villages. An Eritrean holiday known as “Martyr’s Day” on June 20th, pays homage to the war
dead every year. After decades of fighting, Ethiopia’s government
was again overthrown, this time by internal Ethiopian rebels. This effectively ended the
war, and Eritrea finally voted for its independence. However, thirty years of violence left thousands
of displaced people and high tensions between both nations. Barely 7 years after the end
of the war, Eritrea’s new ruler felt his power waning, and attempted to annex an important
Ethiopian border village on the basis of reestablishing official borders. Although international powers
like the United Nations helped both sides agree to a tense but compromised peace, some
80,000 people died during the two year border war. In 2005 during peacetime, a UN commission
ruled that Eritrea had violated international law in their earlier border annexation attempts,
sparking immediate re-militarization of the border by both countries. Today they continue
to stand off, and have had multiple border skirmishes in the last decade. The years of
violence have left these countries among the poorest in the world, with highly restrictive
governments, and severe human rights abuses. Both governments have used this as an opportunity
to crack down on dissent, jail journalists, and severely restrict civil liberties. After so much death and destruction, and a
currently ongoing border dispute, it is exceedingly unlikely that the region will see true peace
in the coming years. Besides threatening to invade Eritrea, Ethiopia
also has a high degree of corruption and has come under accusations from many human rights
organizations. To find out more, watch this video. Thanks for watching TestTube!

  1. I’m Eritrean and I still hate Ethiopian people, even after this peace agreement 2018 with Dr. Abi and Wedi Afom. And the reason why is that Ethiopian people still have no respect for Eritrean. Many Ethiopian don’t even believe in Eritrean Independence Day, the government has not acknowledge what happened to Eritrean people in the war, many Ethiopian consider Eritreans as Ethiopian just because we have the same culture and food and still in 2018 many Ethiopians have no respect for Eritreans and they talk bad things about us in front of my face. Also, many Ethiopian people thing the land of Eritrea and the Red Sea is part of Ethiopian and don’t see it as a separate country. Additionally, I would never marry an Ethiopian and I wouldn’t allow my future kids either. Haile Selassie, Mengustu and Meles were all murders and killers, especially toward the Eritrean people.

  2. I am Ethiopian and Eritrea 🇪🇷 hates ethiopia because they got jealous and
Eritrean government for Ethiopia called weyane

  3. FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS ERITREA WAS A SELF EFFICIENT INDEPENDENT COUNTRY KNOWN AS"""BAHRE NEGASH""" END OUR FORE FATHERS BATTLED BRAVELY FOREIGN INVADERS TO MENTION

ETHIOPIA UNDER EMPEROR HAILESELLASE SO AS TO OWN WRITER's SEA PORTS AND ERITREA GOT UNWILLINGLY ANNEXED BY FORCE WITH ETHIOPIA
SO MY STUPID BIG MOUTH WHITE LIAR U MUST UNDERSTAND THAT ERITREA WAS AN INDEPENDENT SOVEREIGN COUNTRY WAY AHEAD OF ETHIOPIA
THE NAME ""ETHIOPIA""WAS COINED BY MENELIK THE SECOND IN THE END OF19th CENTURY
BEFORE THAT EVEN THE ROMANS KNEW WHAT IS TODAYS ETHIOPIA AS ""ABYSSINIA""

  4. both country have this conflict now because again a bloody white man came in between us as african we were at peace before the invasion

  5. The comments exhibit a different picture though. Eritreans and Ethiopians showering love at each other as if they are ready to re-unite. Well, if that happens I guess it will be good for both of them and Africa as a whole. Ethiopia will get a coastline for trade and tourism. Eritrea will get access to Ethiopia's vibrant open market economy. This region is witnessing tremendous growth at the moment. If only they don't start fighting again.

  6. We are all the same it is all politics just ask my older relatives the governments don’t like each other but the people love each other because they are sometime related a lot of people have their parents in Ethiopia mainly Tigray and they live in Ethiopia!!! We are all the same

  7. Yes we hate Ethiopians they’re thieves, not loyal at all. they’re still in dreaming to colonize our Red Sea and our precious land.

  8. I am eritrean but l love Ethiopia people but i absolutely hate the eritrean president and Ethiopian prim minster because they made us to fight to hate each other thay had killed specially the fq president of eritrean

  9. Lol this western medias trippin, we don't hate at all it's all love, it just some political issues but the people living abroad actually have a good community and relationship. Plus recently they signed a peace agreement and opened their borders.

  10. Ethiopia is the only African country that has never been conquered don’t leave that only piece of information out

  11. White folks like yourself are the actual reason why habeshas (Ethiopia & Eritrea) fought proxy-wars for years. Italy, England, Russia, Turk, America were the actual cause of our ppl.'s death. Unlike the politicians the people loves one another. It took us sometime, but we know what's up now.

  12. This video was made to start division. We love each other. Let's focus on why French don't like the English. Or European not like Americans.

  13. 🔒⚔⚔🇪🇷🇪🇷9🇪🇷🇪🇷⚔⚔🔒 ❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌💊💊💉💉💉💊💊💊Etiop.A 🇪🇹

  14. Maybe hate is a strong word people to people. I would
Say mistrust. What Ethiopia did is horrible, they come to our country we did not go there country and they kill thousands Eritrean to take our land and sea. Until this day they never apologized for the crime they committed. But now we a big problem the independent struggle produced the worst criminal dictator. The good news Eritrean are risen up to overthrow him. Justice will rain in Eritrea soon. Peace in Africa.

  15. Pls! pls! pls! 🙏🙏🙏 change the title to "why do Ethiopian and Eritrean GOVERNMENT'S hate each other?". Eritrean and Ethiopian are two different countries with the same people (exactly the same people). There is no other nations look alike Eritrean and Ethiopian (Habesha people), both nations had lived together for thousands of years. Every ancient Ethiopian history established in Eritrea or include Eritrea, Eritrea is the root of Abyssinia. It is sad most people don't know about Eritrea, the oldest nations in Africa. Both nations had faced many wars together with others (Arabs, Turkish, Egypt, European…). These wars are the main reasons for the separation of both nations. The separation with Ethiopia made Eritrea face another political problem, a similar problem is happening now in Ethiopia. The war between these nations was the very wrong decision made ever in the history of these nations. I hope the new generation will solve the problem for better Eritrea and Ethiopia.

  16. " It is exceedingly unlikely that the region will see true peace. " Who watching this after Ethiopia and Eritrea have opened borders? I will never believe a prediction or a projection After Trump become a President!!

  17. I'm from Eritrea and I hate ethiopians. They are jealous and selfish people. They always want what is not theirs, its unfortunate to eritreans to be next to Ethiopia.

  18. The title if this video should be what is the Middle nations and Europeans obsession with the Red Sea coast and the tactics used to take away Abyssinias independence! Only zombified colonists like Eritreans and Somali have this hate for Ethiopians because they suffer from inferiority complex and dream about Ethiopia all day! Ethiopians don't go around talking all manner of bull about these two wild people. These people lie to ignorant foreigners, about there being major mutual hate instead of talking about the inherited mental sickness that comes from being a colonists slave and running to fight other Africans for your master while seeing nothing wrong with your yearly-coming treachery!

  19. I am an Eritrean and I do not hate any Ethiopian. As people. we have no hatred against each other. Our problem remains on our politicians. God willing, things will change in the coming few years.

  20. I am Algerian and I can assure that they don't hate each other at all just leave them alone you and your devilish country… you stole African people resources for decades and you still trying to push them against each other.

  21. Eritrean?eritrea is the same such as the Eretria, eretria is the name of greek City that it is to mine island.Eretria must is the name.

  22. Very white supremacy or colonialist narrative behind gentil smile.
African should not let foreigners tell our stories their way !!
Check the vidéo again and pays attention to.words that are used.
They Can tell us about their stories not our!!

  23. False: I am From Eritrea🇪🇷 but I do not hate Ethiopians🇪🇹 we have just political problem

  24. Ethiopians fought with their blood and won against Italy twice. we didn't get freedom grant from anyone!!!!!! In fact our emperor Haile Selassie was decieved by the so called league of nation and our freedom fighters fought for their independence in the country side. Italian invasion was only in the capital Addis Ababa so stop twisting our history with your whitewashed nonsense even after what you did you want to take away our pride and glory smh. Long live Ethiopia, land of the origins everything else doesn't matter to us.

  25. You invade us and then try to be friends? 🤦🏿‍♂️ this is why we closed our borders and let your own people fight. You lied about us "supporting" terrorists and we got sanctioned. You destroy our economy and now you say sorry?😂 what a joke. And you "desserve" the red sea? We lost so many so go and cry ypurselves to sleep. You are never getting the red sea

  26. Ethiopia and Eritrea do not hate each other, the TPLF and PFDJ hate each other, hence why Abiy Ahmed, the current Prime Minister has begun to open diplomacy again.

  27. Ethiopia has a long history of independence with unique culture n civilization. Eritrea is a creation of colonization which was part of Ethiopia for centuries .

  28. Haa. u wish why is that always the western countries try to tell us about our own history in un true and manipulative way.

  29. THIS HOW THE WEST DO DIVIDE AND CONCORD AND IT'S WORKING VERY WILL SO FAR IF WE DON'T WAKE UP AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!

  30. We need to leave our land badme and then they will pay us what we lose in war coz of them. No need peace untill they leave our land.

  31. You need to pull down this video as it is no longer relevant due to the fact Ethiopia and Eritrea are have been at peace since June 2018. Also both countries are working on ways to strengthen their relation and greater economic integration.

  32. This is complete nonsense. Ethiopia was never "granted independence". It's never been colonized. The Soviet Union provided us with weapons and we defeated Italy by ourselves. Also Ethiopia may be one of the poorest countries in the world but it's also one of the fastest growing economies in the world too. We are well on our way to becoming lower-middle income country. Unfortunately, these people only focus on Ethiopia's and Eritrea's bad sides.

  33. You should know the truth about why war had happened between Eritrea 🇪🇷 and Ethiopian on 1998 before you open your big mouth.

  34. I would rate this video 3/5.

    I am Eritrean ❤️ 🇪🇷 ❤️,
we don’t hate anyone on this world 💕 🌍. Also “ we can’t stand “any country” to colonize us ( of course including Ethiopia) anymore. That’s it 😊😊.
    😘😘😘 to ethiopia.

  35. Ethiopia won against Italy both times, and Eritrea bad Ethiopia do not hate each other its just the political leaders and political people that do not like each other……….. bruh..

  36. I am Ethiopian i never hated Eritrea. I really love if we reunite again. I see them like Ethiopians. Politicians set a war by their of believes we the people never wanted that. We will unite again we will

  37. May Allah SW help our habasha pepo stop hating each other we all same one race no matter wat religion u got. we gotta big land plz stop wat nonesense u think are united we stand💪🏻 . Love from Somalia🇪🇷🇸🇴🇩🇯🇪🇹🇵🇸🤦🏻‍♂️🤲🏻

  38. As an Eritrean there is no hate to Ethiopia it’s just we the Ethiopia government wasn’t fair to us as a nation and didn’t treat us right

  39. The title of your video is wrong. Your historical analysis is also incorrect. People on both sides of the border are not spending their day hating one another, just worried about putting food on their table. Try learning first before attempting to teach.
