Startup Battlefield Mena 2018: BuildInk (Winner)

– OK, so there are 400 yearly
recorded natural disasters in the world, and at least
10 war zones as we speak. This means that every time
such a disaster strikes, it takes significant
resources to rebuild. Take a look here. This is a typical construction
site, where it takes a minimum of three months
for single-story houses to be built. It’s expensive. It’s time consuming. It’s labor intensive. And it’s a safety risk. This all means that a
family is out of home with no shelter
for that period– no shelter. Buildink is a 3D
concrete printer designed to build single-story
houses in just one week, reducing the total
construction time up to 75%. Our 3D printer also ensures
cost savings and construction in a safe manner. At Buildink, we
designed and assembled a cable-driven robot, including
an automated pulley system. This design can give
accurate results, can be easily installed and
dismantled on the worksite, and can be done in many sizes– 2-by-2, 5-by-5, 10-by-10,
or even bigger sizes. In order to understand the
idea of the cable robot more, can we please move to demo? Although our printer is
located in a nearby workspace, but it’s a 2-by-2-by-2
meters cubed printer and weighs over 300 kilograms. So it’s impossible
to get it on stage. But we will go through a live
demo and show you our printer. Technical. Light. – Can we switch to the video? – Yes, please. – There we go. – OK. So the software guy,
the electric keyboard. These are the complex
motors that we created connected to the cables. Four motors connected
to four cables to move this printing plate
in the middle of the printer. As you can see, this is
a demo, and this printer is currently showing
four layers of squares printed on top of each other. It’s just a proof of
concept of our printer. Move two slides, please. Besides this printer,
building engineers also created a concrete mixture
by our civil engineer who specializes in
material engineering. And we tested this concrete with
one of the top concrete labs in Lebanon. The official results prove that
this mix is two times stronger than the traditional mixes, has
20 times faster setting time, is highly flowable,
so it can pass easily through the printer. It has instant
layer bonding, which is critical in 3D printing. And on top of that, it’s an
environmental-friendly mix. Besides the traditional
way of building, our competitors include
control grafting technology. Their design– their
design is a moving frame design, which requires
rails to be installed around the printing area. Although their design is very
fast, where they can print 100 meters cubed house
in just 24 hours, however, it takes a lot
of time to construct it. Our second competitor
is the Russian arm of Apis Cor., currently the
most successful under market. It can be moved easily
from one site to another, but it can’t close
the buildings since it should be installed in the
middle of the printing area. Now, we at Buildink, we
took these throwbacks of our competitors and
developed the cable robot, where they– where the
printing plate can move freely throughout the cables. The global market
share of real estate is currently estimated
around $217 trillion, with the Middle East
region the fastest growing construction area in the world. The printing– the market
share of 3D printing is currently estimated
around $8.5 billion and is estimated to
reach $35 billion in a five-year span, which
gives Buildink a sweet spot. A good example of
this is Dubai, who plans to have 25%
of the new buildings 3D printed by year 2030. At Buildink, we started taking
small and medium construction projects, where we are using
our 2-by-2-by-2 meters cubed printer, which is half the size
of our full-size MVP that we are planning to
build in the near future so we can
print single-story houses by the end of 2019. Some custom designs
of the printer that we are aim– that
we have right now, we can build outdoor benches,
animal shelters, road blocks, security cabins, and
other designs that will be– these
designs will be sold at a price similar
to the market, but at a very faster rate. We are currently
in the final steps of landing a strategic deal
with a strategic partner, one of the– one of the
largest construction companies in the MENA
region, with branches across Europe and Africa. Our team is made up of myself,
the business manager, who left his full-time job to
make this start-up work, and the group of
hardworking engineers of different backgrounds. We have hardware engineers
and robotics and electronics. We have the civil and
material engineer for creating buildings concrete. And we have software
specialists. Buildink is changing

– Test? Hi. Thank you for the presentation. First question for me,
you mentioned a lot that it’s fast to set a building
and get it– get them going. And you tested that it’s very
fast to set the concrete. I wonder what sort
of test or simulation you did for the long
term of this building. Will it last long term? Will it– will it– will it survive at a rain,
extreme weather, storms, et cetera? – Yes, of course. This concrete mixture
is an improved formula of the traditional
mixes that are formed right now. So yes, it stays longer. It’s stronger. It can take any rain, like
any other concrete mixture. So that’s not a problem. – Thank you. Hello. Thank you very much. – You’re welcome. – Can you hear me? Thank you very much
for your presentation. I really enjoyed that. One question, and I know we’re
kind of far away from this. But I want to know
what you envision the business model to be. – We are currently going to
land a deal with construction companies where we can
take construction projects, help these companies
in building houses or in building parts of the
houses for the long term. As for now, we
are only building, like, outdoor benches and
such small or medium-sized furniture. – And are you currently
selling the small or medium– are you selling it, or
are you just testing it? – Yes, we are selling,
to paid customers. – Thanks for your presentation. – You’re welcome. – I wanted to ask
you, what do you think are the key
ingredients for you to scale and grow quickly? And how do you plan
on achieving that? – Besides the financial
help, we actually need the help of a
construction company that we are in talks right now. So if they can keep their eyes
on us, help us in any matter, and especially in
civil engineering, that would be great. – Are there any climate-based
restrictions that you have, whether on the equipment
or the mixture itself, whether too hot or too
cold, in terms of actually producing buildings? – Sorry, I [INAUDIBLE]. – Is there a temperature range
to this, in terms of being, you know, plus 40 degrees
or way below freezing where it won’t work well? – We are going to test this
mixture next month in Dubai or Saudi Arabia so we can know
that its structure doesn’t change at high heat
or at low heat. So it is planned to be tested. – Cool, thank you. – You’re welcome. – OK, I just, another question. So as you said, it’s going
to be the future, more and more 3D printer, et cetera. We’re all worried about the
environment and the future as well. So I wonder as well, when you
designed your own concrete, what– how did you think about the
environmental impact on it? – Yes, we use some material
different than normal cement. We have to patent this mixture,
so I can say what we can use. – Right. – But we took this
into consideration. We’re using material that
emits less CO2 to the air. – OK. – So that’s it. – How does your– how does your
competition look like? And has this been done before? Are you innovating? And how do you– how are you going to deal
with the competition? – As for the cable robot,
it’s for the first time– it’s done for the first time. The cable robot in concrete,
it’s done for the first time. So I think we can
develop it very fast, and taking into
consideration what our competitors do to avoid– of course to avoid
