Scott Galloway: Attack of the Drones

A winner: Facebook. Despite all the attention on Snap this month, Facebook is excelling across several dimensions. The tech giant leads competitors in revenue growth with a 50% increase in Q4 2016, twice Amazon’s growth rate. The law of big numbers don’t seem to apply to Facebook. Despite the recent controversy regarding Facebook’s reported metrics, advertisers are still throwing money at the platform. According to L2 research, Facebook registered the greatest year-on-year growth in ad spend among peer platforms. Further cementing its hold on the ecosystem, Facebook dominates the mobile app business. A winner: burrito lovers. Chipotle has cut wait times for digital orders by 50%. Thousands of customers place digital orders before the restaurant opens and then pick them up in a separate line, eliminating bottlenecks at the cash register unlike Starbucks, whose popular mobile ordering system has proven problematic in store, overwhelming baristas and frustrating customers. Starbucks has invested heavily in mobile, which accounts for 27% of transactions. Last month the chain launched voice ordering in its mobile app and Amazon Alexa, but what they’re missing that Chipotle gets? Pork. The other white meat. I love Chipotle. If I go on a first date, I take her to Chipotle. When I stop liking her, I just continue to take her to Chipotle and she breaks up with me. I don’t care about the health scare. You could produce a Zika bowl and the big dog is eating more and more of that stuff. He loves you. A loser again: Snapchat. We’ve referenced a number of times that Instagram has borrowed features from Snapchat. This time Facebook’s offspring WhatsApp is taking a lesson from the Snap playbook with the launch of its new status feature. Users can share disappearing photos, GIFs or videos and add their own emojis and captions. Sound familiar? Let’s be honest, the ecosystem would benefit from a third player. I have a bad feeling about this. We believe Snap could be the spark that torches the market. A winner: drone manufacturers as every company is getting into the game. Verizon bought a drone startup just last week, UPS is testing trucks with drone launching pads, although they botched one demo, and 7-11 beat Google and Amazon to the punch with their first drone delivery. By the way, when I go into a 7-11, it’s me screaming to the world, I am so fucking hungover I have become a moron with respect to food and nutrition decisions. In July, 77 customers in Reno, Nevada received their orders via drone. The initial delivery included a chicken sandwich, donuts, coffee, candy and Slurpees. Bitch. We’ll see you next week.

  1. I think we found someone who finally gets me!

I too also call people bitch out of nowhere, after slapping something expensive.

  2. Just got into an MBA.program, and it isn't Stern. I guess even if I'll never actually sit through full lecture blocks of Prof. Galloway's rantings I'll still have these videos <3

  3. Transportation and convenience of delivery is going to be a huge factor for retailers going forward. Having a physical store is a feature to having a good webshop, now delivery is up next.

  4. 0:35 "Facebook DOMINATES the mobile app business"

uhhhh doesn't Google have 5 apps on that list … ?

  5. RE: Facebook. Give it a few years. First there was Rome and there was a lot of activity on the Titanic as it was sinking, from a distance it's hard to distinguish from a distance from a party and panic.

ย I don't give a f*ck why people are so excited about Snap. It reminds me of a narcissitic Viewmaster which you can't find outside of pawn stores today.

  6. RAY BAN IS KILLING IT. I went to buy a pair of aviators and they really offer the first website to virtually fit the shades to you head that actually WORKS.

  7. The comments in the video are heralding him for economics, this is about the market. He is the marketing professor at NYU. I wish I could take his class! -Econ degree holder

  8. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………bitch

  9. Awesome episode – I take my dates to Chipotle. When I don't like her anymore, I stop taking her to Chipotle haha

  10. Another winner: Galloway Ads. They've raked in an estimated seventy-five thousand subscribers total in past years.

  11. I must agree with Sarath on international perspective, PLEASE give us comparisons of foreign companies in relation to competitive value of US growths. I know China is a vicious Reverse Engineer and this could play out.

  12. I dont know how you did it, but you've actually made me interested in economics. Well played sir, well played.

  13. Has anyone in this comment thread had any success using FB advertising? My company got over 1.5m followers on our page but as far as bringing customers in, the platform didn't do anything for us (with paid post boost and advertising). Plenty of likes, no customers. Additionally, the analytics FB showed us versus Google analytics were completely different. I also spoke with a guy who makes several million dollars per year as an affiliate marketer. He gets terrible results using FB and stopped using it all together. Maybe it depends on what your company is selling? For example, dating sites and weight loss programs probably do well. Maybe?

  14. they should talk about TICC cpaital corp. sure, its a small company, but since I bought it, the share price rose 21%!! and they have ~15% dividend?? what??

  15. I have no idea where this channel came from, or why it's named K2, but I love these videos. It's a great brief business update with some great humor tossed in. Keep up the good work guys. ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

  16. Yes but I believe it's consistent. "The Big Dog" keeps saying it's a winner take all economy, that the ecosystem could benefit from a third player (he doesn't say several, cause, where are they, right?), that tech might even be on structural decline except for Google and Facebook (and Amazon) so unfortunately you can't ask for variety if there's only a handful of US tech companies as players.

  17. Scott "The Big Dog" Galloway don't give a fuck about you, or your bitch-ass drone.
He only cares about two things: Winners & losers

  18. OMG I found someone who loves Chipotle as much as me! If someone was smart over at Chipotle they'd be advertising on your channel asap! Smart and funny as ever Scott! Keep swatting those drones and trolls!

  19. Drone companies could improve sales by teaming up with VR goggle companies. You then could attend your kid's soccer or football games even if you are stuck in some airport somewhere! And you could help with coaching in real time!

  20. Scott, I got to 7-11 just to see that same hot dog spinning endlessly by the cash register that's been there since the 90's.

  21. Hi Scott! Agree that Facebook has killer apps but at :40 you also see that 5 of the 10 are owned by Google. Just sayin'

  22. I don't have a single financial investment in any company (because I'm a poor millennial kid), but I keep coming back to these videos for the writing, editing and sick humor. I guess the business info is just a bonus.

  23. When I don't feel like watching twitch or game tourneys, I find myself here more and more.

  24. Very clever ad. Usually ads REALLY piss me off; in this instance you've made yourself an exception. Let's present some global things shall we? Like the humor. Keep it up I think I'll subscribe.

  25. Wonder when Facebook is going to get their Copyright infringement Engine Under Control then, So many of there "view" Is stuff stolen from Video off of other platforms. its a Freebooting Machine

  26. I feel drones will be a bubble until they crack the noise problem. Right now we're seeing the combination of cheap batteries and wireless control but until they stop sounding like flying vacuum cleaners, they're not going to go mainstream just yet

  27. Scott awesome videos! I really wish you can teach at my school. It will be so great to have you as a professor!

  28. Since 5 out of the 10 most popular apps are Google made would it not make more sense to say that Google dominates and Facebook gets 2nd

  29. Chipotle's food is ok and i'm not scared of the health consequences… However, I won't put money in Chipotle's pocket because of the huge amount of waste trash this company creates. When you finish with your meal, just look at all the trash that is laying on the table. For a company that is concerned about sourcing great food, they sure look the other way when it comes to their trash footprint.
