Samsung licenses ORNL transparent superhydrophobic glass coating technology for electronic devices


Water sticks to many surfaces and what
we are developing here is a surface when the water comes in contact, either
easily rolls off from the surface or bounces off of that surface which is called superhydrophobic. Basically what we do is we deposit a
glass coating, a specially formulated glass coating, on a glass surface. After the deposition, we heat treat the material, which phase separates into two different material systems. Then we finally etch one of the material system out of the structure and we end
up with a sponge or a coral looking porous nanostructured surface that enables us to have multiple functionalities. One being the
superhydrophobicity on the surface and the other one is the anti-reflective
property of the surface Our superhydrophobic technology recently has been licensed by Samsung Electronics and their main interest is on electronic
devices that they would like to use this technology for their tablets, for their
phones, for any electronic display which utilizes glass-based covers on the screens and we are hoping that in the near future we can all see the benefits of
this technology in our everyday lives.

  1. This will be excellent for outdoor displays, wearable technology, automotive applications (good bye windshield wipers) and thousands of other uses.

    Can't wait to experience it first hand in a few years.
