How to Overclock your 60Hz Monitor (Sometimes up to ~80Hz)

Hey guys, Maxim here. With most 60Hz monitors you can actually increase
the refresh rate. This is pretty nice if you have more than
60 FPS in-game and you want a more smooth experience. I have a 60Hz HP monitor so I’m gonna show
you three ways. The first method is to test and see if you
can get higher hertz, just by lowering the resolution. A lot of normal 60Hz monitors can get up to
75Hz when the resolution is lowered. If you’re able to play with lower resolution
without it being a concern to you, then try this method first because it’s the safest
option. The next two methods involve overclocking
your monitors refresh rate. This could potentially damage your monitor
which means that it might not work properly after a couple months of usage. Now you know, so please do it at your own
risk. So the second method is to choose a custom
refresh rate inside the graphics control panel. In my case I use Nvidia. Right-click on your Desktop, open Nvidia’s
Control Panel and navigate to the “Adjust desktop size and position” menu. Tick the “Override the scaling mode set by
games and programs” and apply. Now go to “Change resolution” and click “Customize…”
at the bottom. Here you need to “Enable resolutions not exposed
by the display” check box, and click on “Create Custom Resolution…”. Keep the resolution as it is, now it’s time
to test the refresh rate and see how far up you can go. From here you will need to move 1Hz at the
time to see if it works. If it works, your display will flash and you
will see your desktop. If it doesn’t work, your monitor will go black for 20 seconds then it will revert the changes. I was able to overclock my 60Hz monitor all
the way up to 80Hz without any issues. Like I said before and keep in mind, this
might damage the lifespan of the monitor. The third option works for almost all GPU’s,
and it requires you to download a software called Custom Resolution Utility. Check the video description for a download
link. Open the compressed file, put everything in
a folder and run CRU. Choose the correct monitor and on detailed
resolutions, press “Add”. Here is where you can experiment with different
settings until you find something that works for you. I would recommend that you try to go up slowly,
and not too fast, for now I’m just going to put 75Hz. When you’re done, press OK and OK again to
save your settings. Now to finish the setup, run the restart file
which will restart your graphics drivers. If you have a 64 bit operating system use
the restart64 file instead. When that’s done, test and see how the new
refresh rate looks. So that’s how you can overclock your 60Hz
monitor, the results you will get depend on the monitor you have so let me know in the

  3. But the question is will doing this burn my monitor or decrease its life? Cuz mine can be pushed to 1080p75 and I like it that way but I fear it will be dead within few minutes if I use it longer.

  5. I overclocked a Samsung tv I use as a monitor to 77 Hz at 1280×960 resolution I could not go any higher. My last monitor was 75Hz so when I played on the TV at 60Hz I could see the difference.

  6. guys i do you fevor here . if the typical 75 hz 120 hz won't work for you try werid numbers. for me 75 hz will not work . but 79 hz works and it's amazing try all the numbers start from 60 till 90 hz number by number restart and repeat if your lucky you may get 98 hz my friend got it it's so weird 75 wont work but 98 hz good luck homies

  9. my 60hz monitor went from 60hz to 80hz when i went to anything above 82hz the monitor went blurry and then at 85hz it went black

  10. I don't care if my monitor breaks after monthes of overclocking. If it breaks my dad will have to buy me a new one because this one is old and not working properly.

  11. Dunno why but firstly I could overclock to 70 hz but everything above to 75hz was showing off with some artefacts. Then I just instaled Pixec Clock patcher and then I could use 75 hz on my 60 hz monitor 🙂

  12. finaly this fix my problem with old game 😀 i underclock my 75hz display and now i can play re4 😀 nice! (and newer game play on 85fps :D)

  13. You need to find your monitors cpu, and put a heat sink and possibly a cpu fan on it. This will allow you to over clock to your hearts content.

  14. 1:53 He is wrong. This will not damage the lifespan of your monitor whatsoever. Adjusting the pixel clock in third party software might, but this is completely harmless.

  15. My monitor is 76hz from 60hz. Makes a huge difference is some situations. Most programs only play at 60fps like netflix and youtube (both max out application wise to display 60hz). But now when playing games there is less tearing and if i use VSync, even if it dips below 75fps, it won't effect the gaming experience BUT when it was 60fps, dipping would effect the experience. Also, overclocking your monitor should not stress it unless you're being unreasonable. It has safety measures to protect from such dangers.

  17. I had my monitor already oc to 70hz but then I saw this video I went up to 80hz but it was a little blurry so I went with 79hz , perfect.

  18. Tried this but started getting some weird artifacts at arround 75hz probably just because my monitor is so old. I'm still running DVID lol. I was planning to upgrade later this month, but I figured this would hold me over until black Friday sales hit.

  20. If your screen is looking really bad after over clocking past 67 hi in nvidia control panel then change timing to cvu reduces bank and that should fix it
