A New Google+ | Crunch Report

NEW GOOGLE+, A GIF-MAKER FROM Tumblr, ANGIE’S
LIST REJECTS $500 MILLION. IT’S TUESDAY NOVEMBER 17TH AND THIS IS CRUNCH REPORT. I’M KATIE ROOF, IN FOR SARAH LANE. SOME BIG
SOCIAL MEDIA NEWS. JUST WHEN YOU HAD THOUGHT GOOGLE HAD GIVEN UP ON SOCIAL, THE COMPANY
UNVEILED A NEW GOOGLE PLUS. THE REDESIGN CENTERS AROUND “COMMUNITIES” — ITS GROUP FORUMS — AND
“COLLECTIONS,” ITS ORGANIZATION OF POSTS BY TOPIC. WELL, A+ FOR EFFORT — OR MAKE THAT
A +1. IN OTHER GOOGLE NEWS, THE POPULAR GOOGLE PHOTOS APP — WITH 100 MILLION USERS — IS
NOW MAKING IT EASIER TO FREE UP STORAGE WITH ITS NEW APP THAT LETS ANDROID USERS DELETE
PHOTOS IN BULK. YOU DON’T NEED ALL THOSE SELFIES ANYWAY. WHO LOVES GIFS? EVERYBODY, RIGHT? WELL IT
JUST GOT A WHOLE LOT EASIER TO MAKE YOUR OWN. TUMBLR HAS NOW ADDED A GIF-MAKER TO ITS APP.
THE TOOL LETS YOU QUICKLY TURN IPHONE VIDEOS OR BURST PHOTOS INTO GIFS — THOSE SHORT VIDEO
REPLAYS THAT MILLENNIALS LIKE TO HAVE FUN WITH. JUST WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T CALL IT
A JIFF. $500 MILLION SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF MONEY BUT
IT’S NOT ENOUGH FOR ANGIE’S LIST. THE HOME SERVICES COMPANY CONFIRMED TUESDAY THAT THEY’VE
TURNED DOWN A $512 MILLION ACQUISITION OFFER FROM IAC — AGAIN. WE’RE WORTH MORE THAN THAT,
SAYS ANGIE’S LIST. THE BID OF $8.75 PER SHARE WAS MADE ON NOVEMBER 11TH, WHICH REFLECTED
A 10% PREMIUM ON THE STOCK AT THE TIME. SHARES HAVE TRADED UP SINCE THEN AND CLOSED TUESDAY
AT $9.96 WITH A MARKET CAP VALUING THE COMPANY AT $576 MILLION. IAC, WHICH OWNS ABOUT 150
OTHER INTERNET BRANDS INCLUDING HOMEADVISOR BELIEVES THAT IT COULD CREATE ADDED VALUE
TO ANGIE’S LIST…BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE IT WILL COST THEM A PRETTY PENNY. MICROSOFT CEO SATYA NADELLA SAID TUESDAY THAT
THE COMPANY IS MAKING BIG BETS ON SECURITY, SPENDING MORE THAN A BILLION DOLLARS IN RESEARCH
AND DEVELOPMENT EACH YEAR. NADELLA SAID THAT MICROSOFT WILL BE IMPROVING PROTECTION OF
CUSTOMER DATA BY OPENING UP A CYBER DEFENSE OPERATIONS CENTER TO HELP RESPOND TO THREATS
IN REAL-TIME. THE COMPANY IS ALSO ANNOUNCING ITS ENTERPRISE CYBERSECURITY GROUP, OR A TEAM
OF EXPERTS THAT WILL HELP ORGANIZATIONS IMPROVE THEIR I-T PLATFORMS AND DETECT THREATS. YOU
BETTER PROTECT THAT DATA. AS IF IT WASN’T EASY ENOUGH TO GET THINGS
DELIVERED IN NEW YORK, APPLE JUST MADE IT EASIER. THERE’S NO LONGER A NEED TO SEND A
TASK RABBIT TO WAIT IN LINE FOR THE IPHONE BECAUSE APPLE IS PARTNERING WITH POSTMATES
TO ALLOW NEW YORK-BASED CUSTOMERS TO ORDER PRODUCTS TO BE DELIVERED THE SAME DAY. ALREADY
IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, THE POSTMATES PARTNERSHIP PROMISES PRODUCTS DELIVERED IN
A 2 HOUR TIMEFRAME …HMM THE ON DEMAND ECONOMY…ARE WE LAZY ENOUGH YET? WELL, THAT’S IT FOR TODAY… THAT’S THE REPORT FOR TODAY. I’M KATIE ROOF IN FOR SARAH LANE. Crunch Report airs every weekday at 7 pm Eastern,
4 pm Pacific, on techcrunch.com. You can also find us on iTunes, and on YouTube. See you
tomorrow!

  1. She's a person under 40 living in California that doesn't use the word 'like' every three seconds.
That alone makes her aces with me.

  2. I hope that Katie doesn't read that of course, I don't fancy offending her, but for the others at Techcrunch : she's really bad right ? It's really amateur.

  3. I hate it. It sucks now. But I can't even use it because it's being retarded and crap. I like the old version of Google+ more >:(

  4. Google has basically ruined the desktop experience on google plus. Not everyone uses a damn tablet! They're gutted many useful features and turned everything into a child's toy. Separating everything out just makes it more confusing. I'll be going elsewhere once they force this crap on us. You're madness Google, virulent madness. And everything you touch dies with you.
